Apply now! PhD student (m/f/x) for the Department of Transfusion Medicine and Hemostaseology (UK Erlangen)
The Department of Transfusion Medicine and Hemostaseology is offering a PhD position starting early in 2022. The project aims to identify early markers of immunodysfunction in systemic inflammation with a focus on sepsis and severe injuries. Furthermore, potential therapy mechanisms targeting neutrophil dysfunction (e.g., modulation of NHE1) will be addressed.
Scope of the project:
- Characterization of neutrophil functions in vitro after stimulation with sepsis related mediators
- Linking of granulocyte (dys-)function with early cellular markers as certain antigens or intracellular alterations
- Advancement of a whole blood environment simulating sepsis, e.g., improvement of an already established ex vivo whole blood model
- Translational application of the identified markers in experimental and clinical sepsis
- Development of a rapid, clinically applicable method to stratify the risk of patients with related to the function of the immune system
- Project-related publications (PMIDs): 32958893, 33178198, 33796110
Essential experience/qualifications:
- Master or equivalent degree in life sciences, including molecular medicine, biochemistry, biology, or bioinformatics
