Doctoral scholarships by the Heinrich Böll Foundation: Apply now!

The Heinrich Böll Foundation grants scholarships to approximately 1500 undergraduates, graduates, and doctoral students of all subjects and nationalities per year, who are pursuing their degree at universities, universities of applied sciences (‘Fachhochschulen’), or universities of the arts (‘Kunst-/Musikhochschulen’).

The regular duration of a scholarship is three years. The foundation does not offer completion scholarships. Scholarships amounts €1350 per month plus €100 per month research costs allowance. Scholarship holders might also receive family and/or childcare allowances, health insurance, financial support for research stays abroad and further similar allowances.

Applications can be submitted twice per year, on September 1st and March 1st. Applicants must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Proof of admission to doctoral studies by a state or staterecognized university, as a rule in Germany
  • University diploma
  • Preliminary work on the PhD project and a valid timetable for completion
  • Proof of proficiency in German (at least B2 or DSH 2)

The selection procedure consists of three stages:

  1. Submission of application documents
  2. An interview with a liaison lecturer
  3. Digital interview with committee

At each stage only a small group is selected for the next stage.
