Apply for a PhD position at the Department of Transfusion Medicine and Hemostaseology
The Department of Transfusion Medicine and Hemostaseology at Universitätsklinikum Erlangen is offering a position for a PhD student (m/f/x) starting in August 2022. The applicant will contribute to the project “modulation of the inflammatory response of neutrophils during sepsis by targeting the sodium proton exchanger 1 (NHE1)”.
Scope of the project:
- Characterization of neutrophil functions in vitro after stimulation with sepsis related mediators
- Unraveling the relationship of intracellular pH and cellular function of neutrophils in dependence of NHE1
- Advancement of a whole blood environment simulating sepsis, e.g., improvement of an already established ex vivo whole blood model
- Translational application of the identified mechanisms in experimental and clinical sepsis
Essential experience/qualifications:
- Master or equivalent degree in life sciences, including molecular medicine, biochemistry, biology, or bioinformatics
- Solid knowledge of basic laboratory methods (ELISA, Western Blot, qPCR …)
- “Can-do” attitude with a high motivation combined with the desire to work in an interdisciplinary team of scientists, physicians, students, and post-docs
- Bioinformatic skills and/or experience in flow cytometry and/or cell sorting are advantageous
- Proficiency in English, another language is beneficial
Additionally beneficial are:
Mandatory requirement for international applicants: Proven ability to work in an international environment (e.g., an internship >3-6 months abroad).
