Call for applications and nominations for the 2023 Renate Wittern Sterzel Prize: Equality Prize at FAU
Following a resolution passed in 2005 by the Executive Board, the Renate Wittern Sterzel Prize of Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) is awarded annually for the promotion of equal opportunities to a particularly successful project, for outstanding commitment or for innovative activities at FAU.
The prize was named after its initiator in 2009, which means FAU is honoring the work of Prof. Dr. phil. Renate Wittern-Sterzel, FAU’s first women’s representative and the first female vice president at the University. She has been a committed and successful advocate for gender equality at our University for over 30 years now.
In 2012, a decision was made to include diversity management to the list of possible prize winners to ensure that projects for promoting diversity in FAU’s organizational culture can also be honored.
The prize can be awarded to members and/or organizational units of FAU. The prize money is 10,000 euros. The aim of the prize is to encourage all members of FAU to develop ideas and projects for promoting equality of opportunity and for promoting diversity at FAU in research and teaching. The prize is awarded to the following:
- Organizational units or supervisors who are particularly committed to equality, family-friendliness and diversity in their area,
- Innovative activities in teaching and research that promote equal opportunities at FAU,
- Targeted measures that have led to a considerable increase in the proportion of women in areas where they are traditionally underrepresented,
- Convincing ideas that have been implemented to promote diversity at FAU with regard to ethnic or social background, religion, age, health problems, disabilities and sexual identity,
- Student activities and teaching projects that specifically deal with and promote equal opportunities,
- Original scientific projects relating to research into equality and diversity.
Suggestions for prize winners can be made by all FAU members, including students. Direct applications are also possible. Applications should be sent to:

The informal application should include the following:
- A short description of the project or activity including goals, target groups and schedule
- The name of the person responsible including a telephone number and work address
- An explanation of the effect of the project/activity as regards promoting equality of op-
portunity at FAU - Information about how the prize money will be used
The deadline for submitting applications and nomination ends on June 30, 2023.
The Executive Board decides who will be awarded the prize based on a recommendation made by the Commission for Equal Opportunities. The prize winners are made public by the Executive Board and the University Women’s representative.
